Narrative Design

Last Updated May 20, 2024

Narrative Design is a way to develop higher quality stories, from overall company vision to roadmap features releasing this month. A narrative is how the story is told, vs what the story is โ€” narrative design leads to frameworks which makes storytelling easier and more consistent.

Narrative design is a better way to discover stories you can tell about your product. Depending on your audience, you may tell different stories or tell the same story in a different way.

For example: The story of how you met your partner might change when sharing it with friends versus your parents. Same story, different narrative.

Adjusting your narrative to fit your audience helps stories connect and stay memorable.

Product narratives are ongoing stories, told one release at a time. It is similar to how TV shows unfold over a series, and you can use this format to design your own narratives.
